Is an Annual AC Tune-Up Really Necessary?

Even if your air conditioner seems to be working fine, there are many reasons to have your equipment checked annually, especially if your unit is aging.

Here are a few reasons an annual tune-up is important: 89 man-1

1. Most systems in Ohio don't run for months on end. A spring tune up will give you peace of mind that everything is working efficiently.

2.  An annual tune-up can catch small issues before they become big expensive ones. Regular maintenance is almost always less costly than a repair job.

3. An annual check can extend the life of your equipment. A central air conditioner or heat pump isn't cheap, so you want to be sure it lasts as long as possible.

4. Regular maintenance can lower your energy costs by making sure your equipment is operating at maximum efficiency. Who wants to waste money on high energy bills?

5. You can void your warranty by neglecting regular maintenance. Most new air conditioners come with a limited warranty from the manufacturer.  However, your warranty may require you to keep your AC maintained. Many companies won’t provide replacement parts unless your air conditioner was regularly maintained by an HVAC professional.

Most people never even think about their air conditioners until there is a problem. However thinking ahead, can insure your equipment is working when you need it.

What Does it Mean if Your AC Unit is Leaking Water?

Posted by Ohio Heating

Jun 18, 2021 10:00:00 AM

Your HVAC system can produce a lot of water in a day...up to 20 gallons. Because of this, many of the service requests we receive at Ohio Heating & Air Conditioning are for AC repair due to leaking water caused by condensation. Leaks can occur if the condensate drain is blocked or clogged, the air filter is dirty, and or if there is a hole in the drain pan.

The drain line of your air conditioner can fill with dust particles and bacteria. This can result in mold and mildew growingBryant AC 1109 in the condensation drain. Mold in the condensate drain system is especially dangerous.  A mold colony can disperse spores into the airflow in the supply ducts, and contaminate your entire home. People with allergies and other respiratory conditions are especially prone to suffer when this occurs.

Over time the drain will become blocked. The result is flooding of the overflow pan and possible water damage inside your home. During the colder months when your  air conditioning system is not in use, especially for non-heat pump systems that perform cooling only, condensate and accumulated dust and debris that rests in the drain trap can convert to a dried blockage.

To help prevent the buildup and blockage of the condensate drain line, there are a few various methods of cleaning an air conditioner drain line. The two most popular methods are pouring white vinegar or chlorine bleach in the drain line to clear clogs. We don't recommend you pour chlorine bleach into a drain line. The strong vapors can cause premature oxidation and degrade your pipes.

Residential condensate drain lines are most often constructed of PVC. Chlorine bleach can quickly eat away at the PVC as well as the glue and cement that joins the line to the fittings and the condensate pan. Pouring bleach into a condensate drain will flush the drain pipe and its contents to the outside of the home. This can damage plants, lawns and anything it drips or spills on.

If the blockage does not clear after flushing with vinegar, a wet-vac or air compressor can be used to help clear the clog. Be extra careful. Damage can occur to your system if not carried out properly. Should you damage the PVC pipe, it could lead to water damage.

Flushing your system with vinegar or using an air compressor cannot solve the problem for every homeowner.  Air conditioning systems are not all installed the same way. Often gaining access to the condensate line can be very difficult and an experienced technician is needed.

Preventing condensate blockage depends on how well your system is cared for and how often you replace the filter. Regular service and HVAC maintenance is always recommended every six months for optimal performance and to extend the life of your equipment. If you need help, give us a call. Include Your Air Conditioner in Your Spring Cleaning

Posted by Ohio Heating

Spring is the perfect time to do a little cleaning and maintenance on your air conditioning unit. You want to be ready when those hot, humid summer days of summer arrive.

Here are some spring cleaning tips for maintaining your AC:AC maintenance

  1. Clean and replace your AC filters. The most important way to maximize your air conditioner is to keep the filters clean. Dirty filters will block airflow and cause the system to run less efficiently. A dirty filter can lower your efficiency by 5% to 15%.  Change your AC filter once a month. Less efficiency means higher bills to match the higher temperatures.
  2. Check the seal on your window air conditioner.  Room air conditioners need to be inspected to be sure no air is escaping to the outside.  The unit and the window frame should be sealed.
  3. Clean the condenser located outside your house. Exposed to the outdoors, your condenser can get pretty dirty and this will cause your unit to run less efficiently. Use a coil cleaner available at a hardware store.
  4. Clean the fins of your unit.  Don't hose down the fins with a hose.  The dirt could turn to mud and compact into the system.  Use a soft brush to carefully remove the dirt from the fins.  These can be damaged if you are too aggressive with your cleaning.
  5. Check your Freon level.  At the beginning of the cooling season, it is always important to check that the correct amount of refrigerant is in the system. Unless you are experience, it is best to consult a certified technician.

Your HVAC system is one of the most expensive parts of your home. A little maintenance can go a long way towards extending the life of your equipment and keeping it running smoothly.
