Bigger Isn't Always Better with AC Equipment

Is it time to upgrade your old AC? When considering new equipment to cool your home, you need to choose a unit that is the right size to achieve maximum comfort and energy efficiency.

Choosing a unit that is too big can cause problems.

Many people assume that the bigger the unit the zoned HVAC systems 1cooler their home will be. This isn't true. If an air conditioner that is too large is installed, you could have a problem. Over-sized equipment is actually less effective and also wastes energy and money.

Air conditioners remove heat and humidity from the air. If the unit is too large, it will cool the room quickly, but only remove some of the humidity. This leaves the room with a damp, clammy feeling. A properly sized unit will remove humidity effectively as it cools.

When the air passes over the evaporator coil which is very cold, the temperature drops about 20 degrees. In Columbus and Central Ohio, where we have high relative humidity levels, the evaporator coil doesn't just cool the air but also acts as a dehumidifier. This happens when the air hits the coil and the temperature of the coil is below the dew point of the air.

This causes water vapor to condense on the coil. With a cooling unit that is too large, water vapor condenses on the coil but you don't get enough condensation on it for the water to start dripping down into the pan below the coil. If this happens the water isn't drained to the outside. Then your home has a damp clammy feeling.

An AC that is too big can also be more expensive to buy and to operate. It will start and stop more often, thus shortening the lifespan of the equipment.

When a cooling system is over sized, it starts up and shuts down a lot more because it runs for only a short time to meet the thermostat set point. All those starts and stops mean you'll probably be repairing it more often and replacing it sooner.

Buying the correct size equipment for your home will not only save you money on the initial purchase, but also on save you money on energy costs and equipment repairs. Deciding what size is right for your home can be difficult, but the experienced team at Ohio Heating & Air Conditioning can help you find the system that is perfect for your home.

Four Signs It's Time to Replace Your Old AC

Is it time to replace your old air conditioner?
The hot days of summer are just around the corner, so now's the time to be thinking about how air conditioner repair 2you'll keep your family cool during warm summer month.

Don't wait until a hot humid day when your house just won't cool off, and you find yourself calling a service technician to come and make more and more repairs on your old air conditioning system.

You might be asking yourself, at what point do you stop patching old equipment and start investing in a new system?  Will it financially help you or hurt you to purchase a new unit?

Here are four signs that your cooling system may need to be replaced.

1. Your heat pump or AC unit is more than 10 years old. Older models start to breakdown more often and soon repair bills will start to climb. If you notice you are calling the repairman more often, it may be time for a new unit.

2. It is excessively noisy. These units are specifically designed to run as quietly and as efficiently as possible. If your system is making more noise than normal, it may be time to call in an expert to do a system check. You might have a problem with loose or disconnected parts, or the motor could be going bad.

3. It is leaking coolant. You really need to determine why your air conditioning system is losing coolant. A properly working system should never leak refrigerant. A common cause of leaking refrigerant is due to a leak in the evaporator coil or outdoor condenser coil. This can only be fixed by replacing the part. A coil replacement is one of the most significant AC condenser repairs. Not only is this a very expensive part, but some coils can also be hard to get, depending on the model.

4. Your energy bills are rising. As they age, the parts of your AC wear down and they become much less energy efficient. Consider replacing it with a unit that has earned the ENERGY STAR label. Installed correctly, these high-efficiency units can save up to 20%  on heating and cooling costs.

These are just a few of the warning signs that your cooling system probably needs to be replaced. Ultimately this question is best answered by a qualified contractor such as Ohio Heating & Air Conditioning

Is Your Air Conditioner Dying?

Posted by Ohio Heating

Jul 3, 2019 10:26:19 AM

How can you tell when it's time to replace that old air conditioner?

As a leading A/C AC repair words_scontractor, we are asked all the time "When should you invest in a new system?"

Here are some signs that your air conditioner may need to be replaced.

1. Your heat pump or air conditioning unit is older than 10 years.

Consider replacing it with a unit that has earned the ENERGY STAR label. Installed correctly, these high-efficiency units can save up to 20% on heating and cooling costs.

2. It's really noisy.

These units are specifically designed to run as quietly and as efficiently as possible. If your system is making more noise than normal, it may be time to call in an expert to do a system check. You might have a problem with loose or disconnected parts, or the motor could be going bad.

As they age, their parts wear down and they become much less energy efficient. These are just a few of the warning signs that your cooling system probably needs to be replaced.

3. Your energy bills are higher.

You may have noticed a spike in your energy bills.  As units age, they tend to have to work harder to cool your home. This can result in higher bills.

4.  Your calling a repairman more often.

If the problem is something simple and inexpensive like a failed part, you are much better off repairing it. But if a contractor tells you there is a refrigerant leak or the compressor needs to be replaced, you should weigh the cost-benefit options of replacing the whole system versus paying for costly AC repairs.

You will also need to consider what type of refrigerant your old system has (likely R-22) since it is being phased out in favor of a more efficient and environmentally friendly refrigerant, R410A.  It could be more costly in the long term to continue servicing a system with out-of-date refrigerant.

Ultimately this question is best answered by a qualified contractor such as Ohio Heating & Air Conditioning. There are some general rules that can help guide your conversation.  Depending on the age, how often your system runs and where you live, you could be better off replacing rather than repairing it.

Ohio Heating and Air Conditioning has factory trained and  Nate certified technicians that can help you with any and all problems, questions, or concerns that you have about your cooling system. We work on all makes and models.

We make it easy to replace that old system with our easy financing options.
